Silence your Saboteurs
When was the last time you...
...lost your temper and later wondered how that even happened?
...said yes when you knew you should have said no?
...went on FaceBook for ‘a minute’ and stayed for a few hours?
...said you’d start a diet and then ate a piece of cake?
... were hijacked by your saboteurs?
When we were children, trying to make sense of how the world works, trying to keep ourselves safe in a sometimes frightening and confusing world, we made guidelines for ourselves to try and keep track of what worked and what didn't. Over time, those rules, devised by our much younger selves, were forged into unconscious patterns of behaviour and thinking that we often take unchallenged into adulthood and, if left unchallenged, become our standard responses to any threats to our safety and well being.
In other words, we are being given directions by a part of our mind that is following a very old, out of date map. And the worst thing is, that voice can get pretty passionate because it really, really hates change and getting out of its comfort zone.
Fortunately, there is always a tiny space between the threats and the response, a moment where we can choose how we want to act. But it passes very quickly and we tend to do what we've always done and get the results we've always got. Increasing the awareness of the space allows us to use it more wisely. Choosing a different response lays down new habit patterns. It is very possible to accelerate this by building our mental muscles to expand the gap, so that we can respond to lives challenges positively rather than negatively.
